...in 2016. The assumption is taking hold of the 2-seater flagship being powered by a 1.2 liter, normally-aspirated, 250bhp rotary engine and the chassis, and possibly engine, being based off the 2015 Mazda MX-5 that is already well on it's way.
If that is to be the case, then the Mazda/Alfa Romeo partnership that was established to introduce the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is looking to take the struggling Japanese company a whole lot further than initially planned.
The work is being done under chief designer Ikuo Maeda, whose father was head of design at Mazda in the 1970s when the original RX-7 was created.
Maeda says he doesn't "yet know what a new coupé should look like". But he jokes: "I want it built before I retire!"

"normally-aspirated"

As a commercial pilot, thank you for not saying "naturally aspirated".

Hopefully. There were rumblings they would bring it back with a conventional motor because they're tired of not having a direct BRZ/GT86 competitor.

Then it shouldn't be called the RX-7

No, it shouldn't.
MX-7, maybe?

So, it will be a Miata coupe, not an RX7.

So wait, is this seriously a thing? Is Mazda seriously bringing back the RX-7? Wankel and all? Excuse me.

How many times in the past has an RX-7 been rumored to be on track...
And yet nothing available.
If it happens, I will be happy when I see it.
Until then, still vaporware.
At least Alfa Romeo and Mazda have excellent examples of previous styling expertise.
Somewhere between Tipo 33 Stradale, and FD-3S RX-7... they should be capable of designing something truly sublimely gorgeous.

I hope it looks less bloated, and more curved. I tried for mine to look as voluptuous
as the FD3S.

Not if it's actually a rotary...
But even if it is just a Miata coupe, who's complaining?!?!

1.2 liter. "It is undecided yet whether the new RX-7 engine will be a twin or triple-rotor, although one source suggests that a twin-rotor unit is most likely."
DAMN YOU 13B! How lame is that? Actually it's ok. Might as well keep it "original", although 20B sounds nice too.

My only hessitation is that NA part. I see no downside to a turbo rotary.
But if they bring it out, and it's just as good as the tradition has held. Well, I think I can't not buy it.
